Before travelling
Ask for the VIN, title status, maintenance records, current odometer reading and a cold-start video. Match the VIN in the listing to the truck and documents. Ask whether the seller owns the truck or is acting for the owner. Arrange permission for an independent mechanic, a road test and diagnostic scan before spending money on travel.
Mechanical checks
Have your mechanic inspect engine leaks, coolant condition, emissions equipment, brakes, steering, suspension, tires and frame. Request fault history and ECM readings where available. A warm engine can conceal starting problems, so arrange a cold start. Ask what work is due soon and get an estimate before negotiating.
Road test and records
Compare odometer and ECM information with service invoices. Have a qualified driver assess shifting, braking, vibration and temperature under appropriate conditions. A short drive and fresh paint are not proof of condition. Ask for explanations of gaps or contradictions in records.
Before payment
Confirm title transfer requirements with the relevant state agency and check any liens through appropriate official sources. Agree on the inspection findings, included equipment and delivery terms in writing. Do not treat a seller-provided inspection report or marketplace account as a guarantee.
